Musicians React to Increased Audio Production Fees in Malawi

By Chrispin Tsitsamanja

Some Malawian musicians have shared mixed reactions following the announcement of increased audio production fees by the Producers and Audio Engineering Association of Malawi (PAEAM).

On 1st February 2026, the association announced a price adjustment for audio production services, with studio fees now reaching up to K1 million for music production, depending on the type of work involved. The association said the increase is meant to reflect rising operational costs and to improve professionalism and quality in the industry.

However, the announcement has sparked debate among artists.

Evanz Muzik said the new fees may push artists to find alternative solutions.
“I would suggest that artists should buy their own studio equipment. They will save a lot,” he said. According to him, owning basic equipment could help musicians reduce long-term production costs.

On the other hand, Kim of Diamonds raised concern about the impact of standardizing and increasing studio fees.

“Standardizing studio fees risks excluding most artists by making entry into the industry unaffordable and limiting participation rather than growing it,” she said. She added that many upcoming artists may struggle to afford professional studio services.

The increase has raised questions about accessibility, especially for emerging musicians who rely on affordable studio services to develop their careers. While producers argue that higher fees will improve quality and sustainability, artists fear it may slow down growth in the music industry.

As discussions continue, many stakeholders are calling for dialogue between producers and artists to find a balance that supports both quality production and inclusivity in Malawi’s music industry.
