Malawi Film Industry Reaches New Level as “The Royal Dilemma” Premieres in Lilongwe

The Malawian film industry is set to celebrate a major milestone with the premiere of a new feature-length drama titled “The Royal Dilemma.” The film will officially premiere on 27 March 2026 in Lilongwe, and many people are already describing it as a big step forward for local cinema.

Produced by GOSM Films, the movie is being praised for its ambition and quality, with some calling it a “coming-of-age” moment for Malawi’s growing film sector. The story is said to combine Malawian cultural traditions with themes that can also connect with audiences beyond the country.

Speaking about the project, cast member Edwin Chonde said the film carries a strong cultural message while also being designed for wider audiences. He believes this kind of storytelling is important for the growth of Malawian cinema.

Another cast member and sponsor, Idah Esther Chabuka, said the production has the potential to help Malawi gain recognition on the African cinema map. She added that projects like this can open doors for local actors and filmmakers to be taken seriously on the continent.

“The Royal Dilemma” is directed by Isaac Misoya and written and produced by Alinafe Trywell Mwambira, who also appears in the film as part of the cast. The movie also features veteran actors such as Joyce Mhango Chavula, Innocent Manyera, and Ian Chisakula, alongside gospel musician Miracle Chinga, who makes her acting debut.

The production has also received support from local sponsors who are helping to promote Malawi’s creative sector, including Area 12’s The Fort Restaurant. With excitement growing ahead of the premiere, “The Royal Dilemma” is expected to attract attention from both film lovers and industry stakeholders.
