Music Crossroads Malawi Unveils Big Cash Prizes for Directors’ Merit Awards 2026

Music Crossroads Malawi has announced exciting cash prizes worth K1,525,000 for the fifth edition of the Directors’ Merit Awards, giving local bands and musicians a chance to shine and be rewarded for their talent.

In this year’s competition, the winning band will walk away with K700,000, while the second-placed band will receive K350,000 and the third-placed band will get K175,000.
Apart from group prizes, individual musicians will also be rewarded. Cash prizes of K50,000 each will be awarded to the best pianist, guitarist, bassist, drummer, vocalist, and wind instrumentalist, encouraging excellence among individual performers.
Speaking during a press briefing in Lilongwe on Tuesday, Music Crossroads Malawi Director Mathews Mfune said the awards aim to promote professionalism and improve standards in Malawi’s creative industry.
“These awards are meant to strengthen professionalism in the creative industry,” said Mfune.
The competition is funded by the European Union Delegation and will be held on January 31, 2026, at the EU Ambassador’s Residence in Lilongwe.
The Directors’ Merit Awards have become an important platform for discovering and celebrating musical talent in Malawi. This year’s event is expected to attract strong competition from bands across the country, as artists compete not only for prizes but also for recognition and growth in the music industry
